Maj. Terry Lee Higgins (Ret)

January 21, 1939  ~ March 24, 2024

 

Maj. Terry Lee Higgins (Ret) took his final flight surrounded by loved ones in the care of Baylor Scott & White in Temple, Texas March 24, 2024.

Terry was born on January 21, 1939 in DeWitt, Nebraska and spent his formative years in

Burkburnett, Texas before joining the Marines. Terry’s desire to be a pilot led him to join the

National Guard and later the Air Force before joining the Army as a field grade officer. 

He valiantly served in Vietnam before eventually retiring in Copperas Cove in the early 1980s. Terry was an entrepreneur, owning several local businesses including the first Radio Shack in Copperas Cove, Higgins Fence & Hydro Company (later Town & Country Fence), and more.

He simultaneously was a civil servant instructing Apache and Blackhawk pilots on Fort Hood (now Ft. Cavazos) for twenty years.

Terry was originally married to Marciel Buckley bearing two children, Mark Higgins (Vivian) and Darla Hurd (Deceased). Later he married Nita Gibson (Higgins), whom he was married to for 28 years before she passed in 2013. Terry remarried a few years later to Donna Odom (Higgins) who remained by his side until his death.

Terry was preceded in death by his only brother Jack Garrison and is survived by Donna, as

well as his son Mark and his family, grandchildren Cheryl Rodriguez and her family, Jason,

Deven, and Kamren; John Michael, Kurt, & Kyle Higgins, Heather and Emily Mendez; Stepchildren Shawna Cassell, Misty Rowe, Justin Gibson, Kristen Sickle, Ryan Odom and Allison Odom. As well as step-grandchildren, Courtney Rowe (Jacob), Kattie Rowe (Garrett) and Charlotte Bringhurst (Branden). As well as step-great grandchildren Carter, Harper, Julius, Cora, Makenna & Brax, plus various blended family members as well as family in Nebraska.

Terry was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and enjoyed spending time with friends and family and doing community service. 

Visitation for Terry will be held from 6-8pm on Tuesday, April 9, 2024 at Crawford Bowers Funeral Home in Copperas Cove. The Funeral Service at Crawford Bowers will begin at 11am on Wednesday, April 10, 2024. Interment will be at 2pm at Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery.
