With the 2018 Relay For Life just days away, the Lampasas/Copperas Cove Relay for Life is looking to shatter their goal of $30,000.
This year, the local Relay For Life is set for Saturday, April 28 beginning at 9 a.m. and will conclude on Sunday, April 29 at 12 a.m. This year’s theme is “Relayopoly.”
As of Sunday, all 20 teams participating have raised $29,248.41, which will go to the American Cancer Society.
Teams have been raising funds this spring, which will be totaled on Saturday and results announced at the Relay on Saturday night.
On Saturday, teams will be set up inside the cafeteria at Williams/Ledger Elementary School, with special events and entertainment taking place throughout the day and into the evening.
For the relay, each team’s members take to the marked “track” that winds throughout the portion of the campus dedicated to the Relay, with each team having a decorated “spirit stick” that must be carried on the track throughout the entire 15 hours of the event.
The all-day event is open to the public, which is welcome to participate as the teams continue to raise funds by concessions sales, a cake walk, and more indoors.
There will be a car smash outside all day, as well as a water balloon toss, and at 5 p.m., there will be a Relay for Life Pageant with a $10 entry fee. An adult queen (16 and up) and a child princess (15 and younger) will be crowned, with medals to 1st, 2nd and 3rd runner-up.
The event will feature performances throughout the afternoon, such as from the CenTex Bellydancers at noon and 3 p.m., Baila Pacifica Entertainment at 7 p.m., along with Zumba with DeMeka, and Refit.
Also, a luminarias ceremony and lap will be held at 9 p.m., during which the lights are dimmed and the luminarias glow in memory of those have passed away from cancer, as well as to honor cancer survivors.
Teams raising funds include the Copperas Cove Event Lead Team, Banking on a Cure (Extraco), Paws for a Cause (Mae Stevens Early Learning Academy), Life Beyond The Cure, PWA is #savannahstrong, HUTS Excel, Five Hills 4H, Martin Walker Elementary, ELT November Event, Copperas Cove Five Hills Pageant: Crowns for a Cure, STAR GROUP VETERANS HELPING VETERANS, CCJHS- No One Fights Alone, Bible Way Missionary Baptist Church, Lampasas Bark For Life, Team Blessed, The OWLS, Walmart 381, Texas Pursuit Track and Field, Price Boys, and Copperas Cove FFA.
