A 31-year-old Copperas Cove man died early Tuesday morning as he was traveling on I-14 toward Copperas Cove.

The Texas Department of Public Safety issued a press release on Wednesday morning, stating that 31-year-old Jonathan Emill Vergne-Negron of Copperas Cove was on his 2022 Harley Davidson around the Clear Creek exit.

Around 3:10 a.m., witnesses reported that Negron stood up on his motorcycle as he was traveling westbound on IH-14.

“As Negron was standing up on his motorcycle, he lost control, and fell to the ground. The motorcycle continued westbound and eventually crashed,” stated Sgt. Bryan Washko in a press release. “Negron’s wife was following him as he crashed and stopped to assist him.”

Washko stated that as Negron’s wife was helping him out of the roadway, another vehicle approached, a 2022 Toyota Camry.

The driver of the Toyota, a 32-year-old male from Copperas Cove, attempted to avoid colliding with Negron but to no avail. Negron was struck by the Toyota and was pronounced deceased on scene by Justice of the Peace Nicola James.

The crash investigation is still active and open.

“Texas DPS would like to remind motorists the dangers of reckless driving. Driving recklessly and disobeying traffic laws greatly increases the probability of being involved in at traffic crash,” Washko stated.
