The City of Copperas Cove announced on Monday morning that it is implementing voluntary Stage 1 water restrictions in response to the ongoing drought.

According to the city’s drought contingency plan for Stage 1, residents should limit watering their yards and other landscaped areas to two days a week, between the hours of midnight and 10 a.m., and 8 p.m. to midnight.

“Outdoor water use should be limited between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m., except when a hand-held hose, a faucet-filled bucket, or a watering can of five (5) gallons or less is used.”

The goal is to achieve a five to 10 percent reduction in the city’s overall daily water demand.

The City of Copperas Cove likewise is restricting its water use, to include reducing the flushing of water mains, as well as the irrigation of public landscaped areas.

Copperas Cove joins other area cities such as Killeen and Belton which have also implemented water restrictions.

“Bell County Water Control & Improvement District #1 has recommended, and the City of Copperas Cove agrees, that voluntary conservation measures should be enacted to encourage the responsible use of water resources by the City’s residents, businesses and other entities,” said Kevin Keller, the city's Director of Public Relations.

Mayor Dan Yancey signed the order, which is effective immediately.

Keller said that the city will issue a notification when voluntary restrictions are ended or revised.
