Cove frozen out by Belton 9-1; Dawgs fall 2-0

Wind gusts up to 40 miles per hour of frigid air could not stop the powerful offensive attack of the visiting Belton Lady Tigers on Tuesday night.
 
The Lady Tigers posted an early goal in the sixth minute by junior Mattie Krenek off the pass by sophomore Allison Navarro before a goal on a penalty kick by Cove senior Ali McBride knotted the match at 1-1 in the 11th minute.
 
It was all Belton from that point on.
 
The Lady Tigers punched in four more first-half goals to take a 5-1 lead into the break.
 
Belton’s second score came on a header by sophomore Tiarra Hodges with the assist going to junior Caroline Stegall on a corner kick in the 18th minute.
 
Navarro chipped in another goal on a penalty kick in the box in the 28th minute. Hodges and Krenek then added another goal each to end the half, with assists coming from Navarro and sophomore Cassandra Grimaldo, respectively.
 
Belton quickly scored again in the second half when senior Alexis Mack squeezed past the Cove defenders for a solo goal in the 43rd minute.
 
Hodges completed a hat trick with her third goal of the match in the 45th minute.
 
Stegall then got in on the scoring for Belton with goal on the assist by freshman Rachel Ramm and Ramm scored the final goal for the Lady Tigers in the 58th minute with freshman Izzy Rhoades getting the assist.
 
“We have got to do a better job of finishing,” said Copperas Cove head coach Rox. “We’ve out-possessed many of the opponents we
have played, we just need to find a way to finish.”
 
The Lady Dawgs even their district record at 3-3-2 with the loss. They currently sit in third place in a four-team race to the playoffs. They return to action tonight with a road contest against the Ellison Lady Eagles.
 
The Lady Tigers remain undefeated atop District 12-6A with a 7-0-1 record. They host the Killeen Lady Kangaroos.

BELTON 2, COVE 0
 
The Copperas Cove boys’ soccer team fought hard against the Belton Tigers on Friday but came out on the losing end of a 2-0 shutout.
 
The loss drops the Dawgs to 1-4-2 in District 12-6A action with a home game against Ellison tonight. The junior varsity will begin at 5 p.m. with the varsity to follow.
 
The Eagles edged out the Dawgs 4-1 in the first round of District 12-6A play.
