Golfers took to the Hills of Cove Golf Course Saturday morning, playing a sport they love while raising money for a great cause.

The 20th Annual Altrusa International of Copperas Cove TX Fall Golf Classic: Aiming for Literacy started at 8 a.m. The event was a 4-person scramble with 12 teams of four people each. In addition to the golfing, Altrusa also had a raffle, gave away goodie bags to all participants, and gave away door prizes.

Money raised from the classic will be used to support Altrusa’s literacy service projects in Copperas Cove. This includes purchasing and distributing books to Head Start classes and primary grade level students in the Copperas Cove Independent School District. They also provide large print reading material for nursing home residents.

“This is our main fundraiser for the year,” said Altrusa President Debbie Lacuna. “Our main focus is literacy. In the past, we’ve given books to all 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders in the school district. The books have doubled in price, so we’re in dire need of money.”

Lacuna said that in addition to raising funds for literacy, Altrusa also hosts blood drives, holds quarterly game days at the nursing home, collects and distributes clothing donations to CCISD, presents $1000 scholarships to two graduating high schoolers, and more.

“My wife is a past president of Altrusa,” said Robert Freyer who participated in Saturday’s golf classic. “The money goes to a good cause…They buy books for the kids at school that some of them can’t afford. It’s important. That’s why we always have a good turnout.”

Freyer golfed alongside teammates Richard Caballero, Chong Crawford, and Gordon Irwin.

This is for Altrusa,” said Rick Love. “They help keep the community strong and healthy.”

Love said that he really enjoys golfing, calling it a quality sport.

“You can play the sport regardless of your age or ailments,” said Love.
