The Copperas Cove Police Department faced off against the Copperas Cove Fire Department Saturday in an intense back and forth series of volleyball matches with the Police Department ultimately emerging victorious.

“It doesn’t matter if we won or lost, the kids won,” said Lt. Krystal Baker with the Copperas Cove Police Department.

The entry “price” for the match was a new/unwrapped toy or a cash donation to support CCPD’s Christmas in Cove program. The program helps local families in need this holiday season.

The volleyball match took place in the Copperas Cove Junior High School’s gymnasium starting at 1 p.m. The two teams competed for the best out of five rounds with each round ending after one team managed to score 25 points. Although the matches were close with many impressive rallies, the police department won the first two rounds, the fire department won the third round, and the police department declared victory after winning the fourth round.

Advertised as a game with epic spikes, questionable serves, and lots of laughs, the two teams definitely followed through on their claims. Some matches went on for a while with an intense back and forth, exciting the audience as they cheered on their favorite department. Other matches ended quickly with the serve immediately captured by the net. Some matches ended with a high jump and a spike straight to the ground. Some matches were saved with a dive to the ground, popping the ball back into the air to continue the match while others made the dive in futility missing altogether or knocking the ball out of bounds. Either way, both teams made sure that it was an entertaining matchup.

“It’s about unity and bringing the public together,” said Alan Mainville, captain of the CCFD team. Mainville said that it’s important for them to support the police department and vice versa. “We’re a united front. No matter if it’s PD or FD we’re just trying to look out for each other and do some good in our community.”

“We always have a great time competing against the Fire Department,” said Lt. Baker with CCPD.

Lt. Baker said that the point of the game was to raise money for their Christmas in Cove program.

“We’ve been identifying families in the community that can use a little bit of help during the holidays, and these toys will go to those families,” said Lt. Baker.

“I thought it was a great game,” said Dale Treadway who watched the game. “There was one moment where the ball went back and forth a few times and the police department was able to save it.”

CCFD will have a chance for a rematch against the police department when they face off again December 14, for the annual Toy Bowl at SC Lee Jr. High’s Hanke Stadium for a football face-off. Kickoff is 9 a.m. Admission is a monetary donation or a new, unwrapped toy. Debit card option will be available at the gate. All proceeds go to the Christmas in Cove program.
