AdventHealth Central Texas is stepping into the future with a new Orthopedic Hana Table designed to significantly improve patient outlook.
AdventHealth held a dedication ceremony for the table Friday at 9 a.m. where they officially presented the table to staff and members of the AdventHealth Central Texas Foundation (which donated 50% of the money needed to purchase the table). AdventHealth CEO Kevin Roberts also officially blessed the table.
“It’s another tool in our arsenal of orthopedics,” said Roberts about the table. “A device like this will have a long shelf life.”
Dr. Safa “Cyrus” Fassihi, MD, an orthopedic surgeon at AdventHealth, is the one who requested the purchase of the Hana Table. The table will be mostly used for hip surgery and replacements.
Dr. Fassihi said that there are several benefits provided by the Orthopedic Hana Table, which allows for doctors to have more control over the patient’s positioning, notably allowing them to perform surgery with an anterior approach. This means that the doctor will be able to access the hip joint from the front rather than the back—which is what has been used traditionally. They will use a smaller incision making the procedure minimally invasive. Dr. Fassihi says that this will lead to faster recovery times as well. He estimated that patients could recover significantly quicker through this procedure and will often be able to be on their feet and walk up to two or three times faster than with the traditional posterior procedure.
Dr. Fassihi said that one of the best features of the table is their ability to position their patients. Dr. Fassihi said that, traditionally, about half of the time spent during surgery is just time spent positioning the x-ray machine which will be immensely easier with the Hana Table. The table has a boot to stabilize the patient’s foot and it gives the doctor complete control over the patient’s limb both for locking it into place and for maneuvering it. He said that this is great for imaging with the x-ray machine which, with other tables is complicated due to the patient’s body impeding the images. This is fixed by the maneuverability provided by the Hana Table.
“This is the gold standard for these kinds of tables, especially with controlling the legs,” said Dr. Fassihi. “We’re looking at improved efficiency and improved outcomes…that’s going to give us a significant push into the future.”
The AdventHealth Central Texas Foundation donated about $182,000 which was used towards purchasing the Orthopedic Hana Table and a 3D mammogram machine.
The Foundation’s three major fundraising events are the AdventHealth Central Texas Sporting Clay Tournament which is planned for May 31, the AdventHealth Central Texas Fall Golf Classic which is planned for September, and the Gold Star Gala which is planned for November.
“Those events help us raise dollars to support the departments and their needs,” said Tony Mino, Director of the AdventHealth Central Texas Foundation. “The Hana Table and the 3D mammogram machine were the two big needs for last year, so our goal was to raise the dollars to provide those two pieces of equipment to support the hospital.”
The first anterior hip surgery performed with the Hana Table at AdventHealth is planned for next week.
