Williams/Ledger Elementary School in Copperas Cove teamed up with PSI Delta Sorority to host the school’s annual car show raising funds to support United Way on Saturday.
The event started at 9 a.m. and ran until 2 p.m. More than a car show, the event featured 15 sponsors and 12 vendors, food, 50-50 raffle, music, live entertainment, and games.
Vehicles could compete in 13 different categories with extra awards for best male and female in show, kids’ choice, and principal’s choice. There were 47 registrations for the car show with 36 vehicles entered (some competed in multiple categories).
“It’s going great,” said Terri Jernigan, United Way Coordinator for Williams/Ledger Elementary. “CCISD really supports United Way and United Way supports several organizations that are associated with the kids in our school.”
“We’re always looking for good causes,” said Lori Pettigrew, a member of the PSI Delta Sorority. “United Way is great…Our goal is to help our fellow beings.”
The car show also featured a chance for the children to enter their own vehicles in either the 2-wheel or 4-wheel kids categories. Nora McMullen (4) was thrilled to enter her pink jeep into the competition.
“She’s excited,” said Nora’s mother, Lorin McMullin. “Her big brother entered last year, and this year is her year.”
Lorin McMullin said that Nora’s father is deployed, and Nora was excited to take lots of pictures of the car show to send to him. At the end of the event, Nora’s vehicle was declared winner of the kids’ 4-wheel category, so Nora gets to send him a picture of her winner’s trophy too!
Professional motocross racer and CCHS graduate, Kyler Hawkey was at the event signing autographs and selling t-shirts. Hawkey attended the Williams/Ledger Elementary/PSI Delta Sorority car show along with his girlfriend, Ruth Lautenschlager, and his mother-in-law, Leslie Lautenschlager, an interventionist teacher at Williams/Ledger Elementary. Hawkey said getting to attend an event in the town where he graduated is humbling.
“It’s something that you always want to happen, but something you never thought would happen,” said Hawkey. Hawkey said that he made sure to encourage others at the event to follow their own dreams.
Those who are interested in donating to United Way can stop by Williams -edger Elementary with their donations until the end of October.
As a companion to Saturday’s event, Williams Ledger will continue raising funds for United Way with a color run at Ogletree Gap Park on October 18 with sign-ups at 5:30 p.m. The run starts at 6 p.m.
They are out of event t-shirts, but those who are still interested in participating can do so for a low sign-up fee of $5.
