The Lady Dawgs once again reached the area round of the Class 6A state playoffs and, once again, they were acknowledged for their hard work by the coaches of the district.
After losing 10 seniors to graduation on last year’s regional quarterfinalist squad, the inexperienced Lady Dawgs - with just three returning starters from last year’s playoff team - rallied to win a share of the District 12-6A title. Three Lady Dawgs received superlatives while three more were named to the first and second teams and four more received honorable mention.
Head coach Cari Lowery topped the superlatives with the Coach of the Year nod. She led the young Lady Dawgs two rounds deep in the playoffs and to a 34-11 record against some stiff competition. The 34 wins pushes Lowery’s career total to 685 where she sits in the top 20 in Texas.
Senior Katy Ranes was named Setter of the Year and senior libero Bailey French was named Defensive Player of the Year.
Ranes was very versatile for the Lady Dawgs. She had 839 assists that earned her the Setter of the Year accolades, but she was also tied for first on the team in aces with 60, third on the team in digs with 397, fourth in blocks with 97 and fifth in kills with 154.
French led the team in digs with 706 and had a 15.7 digs per match average. French also was the team’s co-leader in aces with Ranes.
Junior Chyanne Chapman and senior Raeven Dickerson were named to the 12-6A First Team.
Chapman led the team in blocks with 283 total blocks (142 solo) and was third on the team in kills 249. She led the team in hitting percentage for players with at least 300 attempts. She was 249 for 562 with just 60 hitting errors for a .336 hitting percentage.
Dickerson led the team in kills with 360 and had a team-best 46.4 kill percentage and was third in hitting percentage with .313. Dickerson was also third on the tem in blocks with 113.
Sophomore Brianna Acker was the lone Lady Dawg named to the 12-6A Second Team.
Acker came on late but finished with the fourth-most kills on the team with 179. She also contributed 70 total blocks to the team’s 636 total blocks.
Receiving Honorable Mention accolades were seniors Megan Diaz and Jennifer Eubanks, along with juniors Madison Wasiak and Kiarrah Carlisle.
Diaz was second on the team in total blocks with 212 (102 solo) and chipped in 128 kills to the team’s 1,438 total kills.
Eubanks was second best in kills with 342 and hitting percentage with .331. She also contributed 81 blocks and 223 digs defensively.
Wasiak was second in digs with 517 and third in aces with 33.
Carlisle was second on the team in assists with 549. She also contributed 210 digs to the team’s 2,630 total digs and served up 23 aces.
The Lady Dawgs also had 13 players named to the Academic All-District List. The players were: Acker, Carlisle, Chapman, Diaz, Dickerson, Eubanks, Alexis Foret, French, Pria Johnson, Ranes, Ale Ross, Aniessa Vega and Wasiak.
