It was a very good sports week in Copperas Cove

Cup O' Joe | Joe Lombardi

Well, what do you think about Temple and Waco rejoining the Class 6A ranks?
That’s what was all over social media a few days back when the University Interscholastic League, the body that oversees state athletic competition, released the cutoff numbers for each class and athletic directors compared their snapshot numbers, which tell the league how many kids are in the top four grades, to see if they would go up,or down,or stay the same.
Could it mean that Copperas Cove and its current mates in Killeen, Belton and Hewitt might see the Lions and Wildcats joining up to make this a nine-team league, leaving room for only two non-district games?
Or...could it bring about a total reshuffling of the status quo?  Adds?  Deletions?
Naturally, we won’t know anything until the UIL releases its biennial realignment of districts and schools come February, since the powers that be in their Austin head shed are probably still working with push pins and rubber bands on a wall-size Texas map, tying places together for the big announcement.
It’s definintely something to think about and argue over on the Internet.  But, the way I see it, the Cove sports teams can’t be bothered, because they’ll play anybody, anywhere, anytime.  The Bulldawgs have had some great battles over the years with both Temple and Waco in all sports and if they come back aboard, it’ll be just like old times.
One rivalry that goes back a ways will be renewed tonight at Bulldawg Gym when the Lady Dawgs go for their second district win against Midway’s Pantherettes.  In case you haven’t heard, Cove opened league play Friday night with a 53-35 win at Belton, while Midway was dropping a 54-42 home decision to a very strong Ellison squad.  The game will be carried live on www.centexcentral.com at 7 p.m.
Cove and Midway...just the thought of it gives me goose bumps!
Go Dawgs!
