Honea wins District 12-6A Cross Country meet

WACO – Copperas Cove senior Madisen Honea ran a (personal best) time of 18:22.5 to finish first in the District 12-6A Cross Country meet at the Heart Of Texas Soccer Complex in Waco on Thursday morning. She finished in front of Waco senior Anna Garner (18:51.2); a pair of Killeen Lady Roos in junior Abigail Brown (18:52.5) and freshman Michaela Mouton (19:08.3); and Belton freshman Sydney Phelps (19:10.6).
Honea led the Lady Dawgs to a fifth-place overall finish (119 points) with senior Adora Lumpkin-Nevarez finishing 15th with a mark of 20:06.6 followed by junior Breonna McCarthy-Reese who finished 23rd overall with a time of 20:28.1.
Junior Kailey O’Donnell finished 43rd with a time of 21:39.8, sophomore Liliana Perez finished 45th with a time of 21:45, sophomore Alyssa Lynn Moreno finished 46th with a time of 21:46.7 and junior Jalyn Ayala wrapped up the Cove competitors with a 49th-place finish and time of 22:33.7.
The Harker Heights Lady Knights finished first overall with 67 points followed by Belton (72) and Waco Midway (75).
Junior Leyre Marellanes led the Cove JV girls to a sixth-place finish followed by freshman Olivia Hensley (37th – 23:04.3), sophomore Gabrielle Edouard (42nd – 23:10.9), junior Angelica Montanez (47th – 23:21.7), and freshman Melanie Samuel (55th - 23:42.2).
Junior Evan Thomas led the Copperas Cove boys’ team with a 27th-place finish and time of 17:01.3. Sophomore Ayden Seymour (37th – 17:27.7), senior Ahmad Pierce (45th – 17:56.9) and senior Joshua Guerriero (47th – 17:59.7), junior Brandon Sargent (55th – 19:13.1), senior James Ross (57th – 19:16.6) and senior Deayra Corbin (61st – 21:45.4) rounded out the Cove boys’ scores. The team finished in eighth place with 211 points. Killeen junior Gian Mikel Pulido was the overall winner with a time of 15:34.
Killeen Ellison won the boys’ team title with 35 points, followed by Belton (75) and Temple (85). Ellison had four finishers in the Top 7, led by senior Ikel Hernandez (2nd – 15:34.6).
The Copperas Cove JV boys finished eighth with 216 points. Junior Jacob Dickson finished 34th with a time of 18:43.2 followed by sophomore Tyler Morrow (48th – 19:21.4), freshman Zachary Wilson (73rd – 20:26.7), freshman Kendric Steward (77th – 20:36.7) and junior Brennan Buzard (98th – 22:43.8).
Honea qualifies for the Region II meet to be held at the Jesse Owens Memorial Complex and Hulcy Fields in Dallas on Monday Oct. 28. Honea’s group is set to run at 11 a.m.
