Andrew Terry, a 13-year-old student at S.C. Lee Middle School in Copperas Cove, is one of 800 middle school students from around the country chosen to compete in the elite Football University (FBU) Top Gun Showcase at Dublin Jerome High School in Dublin, Ohio next week. “It is great opportunity to be exposed to top level coaching,” said Terry via email. “It’s not only display my skillset but continue to grow as a player and athlete as a whole.” Terry, who plays cornerback and sometimes wide receiver, is considered to be among of the best at his position during the 24 camps held nationwide. Terry was invited to Top Gun because of his outstanding performance as a defense back at the FBU Austin camp. He will join more than 1,600 of the nation’s top athletes at their respective positions and will train with current and former NFL coaches and players. Approximately 75 coaches with NFL experience will be among the staffers of this prestigious event. “No event is bigger than Football University Top Gun,” a spokesman for 247Sports said via a press release. “It is easily the most highly-anticipated camp for us because of the level of talent.” Football University has an impressive alumni list that includes some of the top college football recruits and players in the nation. Headlining the Top Gun Showcase coaching staff is former Arizona Cardinals quarterback Jeff Rutledge, running back coach Robert Edwards, offensive line coach Jim McNally, defensive back coach Ray Buchanan; and wide receiver coach Charlie Collins. Terry, who plays for the S.C. Lee Cougars, hopes to develop his game and contribute to the Copperas Cove Bulldawgs high school program in the years to come. His heart is with the defense but he likes to catch the ball as well. “I’m interested in continuing as a Bulldawg primarily as a corner,” he said. “But I still enjoy wide receiver.” The FBU Top Gun camp is designed to give elite high school and middle school athletes top-flight instruction and have trained some of the nation’s top players. In addition to a list of all-star athletes, Top Gun boasts an elite staff of some of football’s greatest minds who have privately trained and mentored players such as Drew Brees, Matt Ryan, Eli Manning, and Tony Romo. Football University was created by All American Games - the same group that founded the U.S. Army All-American Bowl. The camp will be held Monday through Wednesday of next week.
