Bulldawg basketball comes up short at Ellison
The Copperas Cove Bulldawgs team suffered a huge blow on Tuesday as they surrendered a 31-17 halftime lead to fall 63-61 to the Eagles in overtime.
The Dawgs outplayed Ellison most of the game, leading by as much as 14, but the Eagles kept clawing to cut the Bulldawgs’ lead to just seven at the end of three quarters.
Dujuan Jones then willed the Eagles to overtime with 12 points in the period, including three shots from beyond the arc.
Ellison’s Travian Wright gave the Eagles their first lead of the night at about the five-minute mark of the fourth period.
Senior Malyk Thomas put the Dawgs up by four with 50 seconds to play but Jones sent the game into overtime with a three-pointer and a free throw.
A pair of buckets by senior Devante Robinson kept the Dawgs in the game but a putback by sophomore Casey Armour at the buzzer ended the Dawgs chances of forcing a tie for fourth place.
Cove (12-15, 2-5 in District 12-6A) sits two games out of the fourth and final playoff spot with Ellison (4-3) and Midway (4-3) tied at third behind Shoemaker (7-0) and Harker Heights (5-1).
The Bulldawgs host Midway tonight with a 7 p.m. tip-off.
