Cove Golf continues hot start in Hutto

By TJ MAXWELL

HUTTO – The Copperas Cove boys’ and girls’ golf teams continued their hot streaks with second- and sixth-place finishes, respectively at the Hutto Invitational at the Star Ranch Golf Course.

“The kids endured the weather to come out and shoot some career bests,” said Cove head golf coach Ryan Youngblood. “They continue to have a goal and do the necessary work to achieve it. They are ready to be relevant in District 12-6A and with Monday’s and Tuesday’s performances they opened some eyes. I couldn’t be prouder for them.”

The boys’ team had a stellar showing with four of their five players shooting 80 or below and all five shooting under 86 to earn a second-place finish behind Austin Anderson. Austin Anderson shot a 287 to win the tournament, paced by the phenomenal round of 64 shot by Cade Osgood.

Senior Bryce Anderson led the way for Cove with a three-over-par 74. Caden McAnally followed with a 78 while Travis Dewald shot a 79, Dustin Dean shot and 80 and Donovan Copeland-Ritchie shot an 86.

Cove (311) finished two strokes in front of Hutto, Gatesville and Georgetown East View who all tied for third with a 313.

Cove’s second team of Damon Diaz (91), Bobby Lopez (98), Tyler Brown (99) and Justin Hoosline (101) shot a combined 389 to finish 17th in the 20-team field.

The Lady Dawgs finished in sixth-place, led by Tyler Morrison’s one-under-par 70. The team combined for a score of 406 and the sixth-place finish out of 18 teams. Hannah Stock finished second on the team with a 13-over, 84, followed by Carlene Nelson (87), Kaylee Welch (94) and Gabrielle Leal (95).

Midway won the tournament with a combined score of 386. Mia Ayer led the Pantherettes with a two-under 69. Fellow District 12-6A rivals Belton finished tied for fourth with a combined 396. Megan Ramsey led the Lady Tigers with a nineover 80.

Cove Golf will have a long holiday layoff with their next competition coming in February at the Hancock Springs Golf Course in Lampasas.

The boys will tee off on Monday, Feb 1 and the girls will tee off on Thursday, Feb. 4.
