Copperas Cove’s Amber Boyd has seen the back of Belton’s Brooke Gilmore for far too long. Gilmore has gotten the best of Boyd on the cross-country course for years.
On Thursday at the District 12-6A Track & Field meet at Bulldawg Stadium in Copperas Cove, it was Gilmore watching Boyd cross the finish line first.
Boyd played possum a bit in the first three laps as she waited for the right time to pounce during the 1,600-meter run. Trailing Gilmore by about 20 yards coming out of the first turn of the final lap, Boyd turned on the afterburners and beat Gilmore by more than 30 yards to claim the gold and the second of two qualifying spots.
