Gordon L. Hughes
May 7, 1948- March 18, 2024
Gordon L. Hughes, a former Copperas Cove resident, passed away peacefully at his home in New Braunfels on March 18, 2024. He was surrounded by love.
Gordon was born in Ft. Lewis, Washington, to Joe and Daphne Hughes. In 1958, his family moved to Fort Hood, now Fort Cavazos, where Gordon grew up alongside his four siblings. He attended school in Copperas Cove and graduated from CCHS in 1966.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Virginia Keys Hughes, stepson Jeffrey S. Dickerson (Julie), grandson Ben Harper Dickerson, granddaughter Georgia Claire Nickel, brothers Bernard Hughes and Mark Hughes, sisters Jody Hughes Hodges (Ronnie), Allison Hughes (Orlando) and six nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and stepchildren Douglas A. Dickerson and Angela C. Dickerson.
Gordon was a prominent businessman in Houston, Austin, and New Braunfels. Together with his wife Virginia, he played a pivotal role in developing the Gruene Historic District, establishing landmarks such as the Gruene Haus and the Gruene General Store.
After transitioning from retail, the couple ventured into real estate, notably developing the Common Market Shopping Center on the site of the former Chandelier Dance Hall. Gordon’s expertise in real estate stemmed from his background as a market analyst.
A Celebration of Life for Gordon Hughes will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 20, at Doeppenschmidt Funeral Home in New Braunfels. Kenneth Peters, Copperas Cove classmate, close friend, and retired minister, will officiate the service. A reception will follow at McAdoo’s Restaurant Patio next door.
In lieu of flowers or plants, the family prefers donations to Habitat for Humanity (comalhabitat.org), New Braunfels Food Bank (nbfoodbank.org) or Hope Hospice (hope hospice.net).
