George Thomas Jenkins age 80 of Copperas Cove, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, March 4, 2016 in Temple.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 9, 2016 at Southern Hills Baptist Church in Copperas Cove, with Pastor Preston Atkinson officiating. The family will receive visitors one hour prior to services at the church. Interment with full military honors will follow at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen.
George was born on Sept. 21, 1935 in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, to the late Thomas and Annette Wildrich Jenkins. He graduated from Tunkhannock Pennsylvania High School in 1955. He married Marion McCain in 1958. George served as a Combat Medic in the US Army from October of 1955 until he retired in November of 1975 as an E-7 Sergeant First Class. During his military career, SFC Jenkins served in Vietnam in 1969 and 1970 as a Combat Medic, receiving the Purple Heart, Silver Star, Bronze Star and Air Medals. After his military retirement, he worked as the Medical Clinic Captain from 1977 to 1983, with the Texas Dept. of Criminal Justice at the Retrieve Unit in Angleton. He then worked as a clinical nurse at Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center at Ft. Hood, from 1983 until his retirement in 1995. George loved the outdoors including hunting, fishing, camping and barbequing. He was a member of Southern Hills Baptist Church, where he served as an Elder of the church. He loved his family and friends and will be greatly missed by everyone. Those who knew him will have many stories and memories to cherish for years to come.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Danny Jenkins; and his twin daughters.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Marion McCain Jenkins; two daughters, Brenda Walcik and husband, James of Rancho Cucamonga, CA and Cheryl Mighell of Kempner; two brothers, Leon Jenkins and wife, Judy of Riverview, FL, Jimmy Jenkins and wife, Arlene of Piedmont, OH; one sister, Darla Jenkins of Tampa, FL; five grandchildren, Jason Walcik, Lindsey Martin and Kimberly Rivas of Rancho Cucamonga, CA, Kendrick and Mackenna Mighell of Kempner; two great-grandchildren, Hannah Martin and Harper Rivas of Rancho Cucamonga, CA.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Southern Hills Baptist Church, 2920 S. FM 116 Kempner, Texas 76539.
