Andrew Donald Nixon passed away at the age of 44 on May 14, 2016 in the loving company of his family. He was born in Kingsville, Texas the youngest of three. Growing up he enjoyed playing little league soccer, pee wee football, raising rabbits in 4-H and going on the annual summer vacation to Kansas with the family. In middle school he chose to play trombone in the band and continued this throughout his life.
Andrew graduated from H.M King High School in Kingsville in 1989 and with a B.A. in Music Education from Texas A& M University Kingsville. His first job in 1996 as associate band director was in Los Fresnos CISD followed by Victoria ISD and Harlingen ISD. He also was an adjunct instructor at Victoria College. While in Victoria he was a member in several music groups including, “Sound of Swing” Big Band, “Little Band Combo”, “Crossroad Brass Quartet”, “Hill Country Brass” and was a substitute member of the Victoria Symphony. Andrew then became Director of Bands at Cypress Fairbanks ISD and remained there for 13 years and this past year became Director of Music as well as Director of Bands at Copperas Cove ISD. For the past several years, he was TMEA vice president for Region 27. He was well loved by his students, many of whom kept in contact with him even after he moved to a different district. Andrew was well known for saying, “You get what you give”, “It is what it is”, “Listen & think band” and “One last time”.
Andrew also enjoyed biking, traveling, reading, cooking and spending time with family. Marissa, Brian & Jake fondly remember endless laughing, his big smile and their quirky traditions. He would often whistle a very high pitch that only the kids (not adults) could hear. It took them a long time to figure out what was going on.
Andrew was predeceased by his father, Donald Merwin Nixon. He is survived by his mother, Irene Nixon of Kyle, his oldest sister Melodee Konde and her husband Bill of Austin, Dawnita Nix of Austin, “adopted” sister Grace Kizer of Houston, his niece Marissa Konde and nephews Brian Konde & Jake Nix.
The memorial service will be this Saturday, May 21st at 1:30pm in the Lea Ledger School Auditorium (400 S 25th St, Copperas Cove, TX 76522). Memorial donations can be made in Andrew’s name to any cancer or music charity.
