“A lot of people think boxing is just putting two people in a ring and letting them beat the hell out of each other. It’s not like that, it takes a lot of training, it takes a lot of dedication.” says ex-pro fighter and local gym owner Manny Morales.
That sentiment is felt as soon as you step foot into Cross Box Fitness at 1308 S. FM 116. From the worn indents of the heavy bag to the strands of loosening thread on the speed bags, there is no doubt that fighters are being made here. On the walls are images that inspire and motivate. Images of great fighters that showed the true meaning of the sport even after their time in the ring. Fighters like Manny Morales, who, after retirement, chose to bring his talents to Copperas Cove as a trainer.
Cross Box Fitness is a USA Boxing Certified training gym, that Morales runs with his wife and an assistant. They train for Cross Fit and boxing. Having solidified a bond with the Chamber of Commerce, Manny is excited about the possibility of further cementing his position in the community by being involved with other events, such as a 5K race, helping to promote awareness of the great things to do here in Copperas Cove.
Having already produced a professional fighter, Manny looks to add more to his roster. All ages train at his gym.
Although a handful can’t afford to pay, they work in the gym earning the ability to train while maintaining self-respect. This is one of the ways that he gives back to the community.
The excitement emanates from his face as he speaks of his first event. The “Top Dawg Boxing Show”, happening, Saturday, April 2 at the Copperas Cove Civic Center.
Fifty boxers of all ages from all over Texas will be in town ready to show off their skills in 25 bouts, starting with Lower Class (8-10 years old with less than 10 fights, in three 1.5 minute rounds), Open Fighters (8-10 years old with more than 10 fights, in three 2-minute rounds; and “Masters” (10-plus years old in three 2-minute rounds.
The whole idea for this event is to bring attention to both Cross Box Fitness and Copperas Cove as a city. He believes that CBF can be the push that helps the city level up. His future plans look to include tournaments that bring business to hotels and local shops in the area. Also , he plans to hold Intercommunity events that help residents bond with each other. He wants people to know there are things to do right here in our city.
After seeing men, women and small children intensely training and encouraging each other, the evidence was clear that Cross Box Fitness is making their mark on the community.
Tickets can be purchased at the gym for $15, with childeren under 12 and Veterans with military ID only $10.   Call 737-703-7971 for more information.
