KCCB holds inaugural golf tournament

Keep Copperas Cove Beautiful held its first golf tournament at the Hills of Cove Golf Course Friday morning. 

A total of 52 players, making up 26 teams, played a two-man scramble on a sunny Friday morning as part of the first ever Keep Copperas Cove Beautiful golf tournament fundraiser. 

The purpose of the tournament was to raised funds for KCCB’s scholarship program. KCCB gives out two scholarships to high school seniors every year. 

“It’s important that we help support students in the community because one, it gives an opportunity to give back,” Flores-Achmad said about the scholarships. “We have felt that our citizens of the city of Copperas Cove have always given back to us and so it’s our way of giving back, and that may make a difference in their lives, just like we feel our volunteers are making a difference in the community, in the environment. This is our way of saying, ‘Hey, here’s a little opportunity to help you get to that next level in your education.’”

The recipients for the 2021 KCCB Scholarship were Parker Reed and Arianna Eseroma. 

Keep Copperas Cove Beautiful Executive Director Roxanne Flores-Achmad explained that over the years, the amount of the scholarship has increased from $500 per scholarship to $1,000 per scholarship. 

“When the pandemic occurred, a lot of our fundraisers were at local restaurants, and we obviously couldn’t do it, so we had to think of something that was different and that would engage our community while still being able to help the students,” Flores-Achmad said. “One of our board members brought this idea to us about a golf tournament, and luckily we had two people on there that had been a part of the tournament process, and so it was a win-win situation because we were able to work together, and then the only thing we were missing was we needed our partner American Veterans Mission, and they were able to solidify so they were able to receive money and do the social media stuff so it was a win-win situation.”

The cost to register was $65 per person. Golfers could also purchase mulligans during their playing and different raffle tickets for various prizes as well. Prizes included golf themed paraphernalia, gift certificates, and more.
