The Bookstore Barber Salon held a ribbon cutting with Copperas Cove Chamber of Commerce on Monday morning to commemorate the store’s grand opening.
The new barbershop, located in the Cove Terrace Shopping Center at 256 Cove Terrace Shopping Center, opened its doors to new clients on Feb. 22.
Owner Nikki Reazola said the inspiration for the barber salon came from a 1920s speakeasy located near the Driskill Hotel in Austin, where people can walk behind a hidden bookshelf to get into a speakeasy bar.
“I realized that that’s something that’s never existed in this area, and it’s fun, and it’s inviting, and it’s curious and mysterious, and people are just really interested,” Reazola said. “When you walk into our shop, there’s not a barber shop that you see. It’sliterally just shelves with books and a place to sit and a nice, beautiful antique mirror in the front, and you go through a secret door, and there’s a barber shop. It’s just a nice little Clue-like environment, and that’s what we like to pride ourselves on. We wanted to be different while also being resourceful.”
At the Bookstore Barber Salon, people of all backgrounds are welcome. The salon is women owned and specializes in androgynous cuts and is LGBT friendly.
“We accept everyone- men, women and children,” Reazola said. “We also work really closely with women’s hair. We started off as cosmetologists, so we have the overall spectrum of taking care of people.”
Having the ribbon cutting helped signal that the Bookstore Barber Salon is here and open and ready to be part of Copperas Cove.
“We wanted to be a part of the Chamber of Commerce because we are planning to be a huge part of our community,” Reazolasaid. “I’m also a resident of Copperas Cove, so to start a business in this area was something that was really important to me, so the ribbon cutting ceremony through the Chamber of Commerce was really important because of that, because I needed to be a part of the community and I want the community to know that we are here and that we are apart of this and we are apart of Cove.”
The recent winter storm put a damper on plans for the barber salon’s grand opening event, which is also meant to benefit two charities. The charity event was rescheduled for April 3. This event will be a Car/Bike Show with a Beard/Mustache Competition, with proceeds from sponsorships, donations and entry fees going to two organizations: Project Healing Heroes and We Are Not Broken. The Bookstore Barber Salon ispartnering with the Central Texas Beard and Mustache Club to organize the event. The event will take place at the Pitstop Bar at 14595 F.M. 439 in Nolanville, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. More information on this event can be found on the Bookstore Barber Salon’s Facebook page.
Reazola said she knew she wanted to do philanthropy work through her small business since before she even opened the doors.
“I think that it’s important that when you open a small business that you also reach out to the community and your overall opportunity as a local, small business would be to enhance your community, and that’s why I decide to do this,” Reazola said. “I wanted my grand opening to be big and huge, and I wanted to make a statement that we are here, and we’re here to help, so I thought it was really important that we do that.”
The salon’s mission statement also gives a nod to that motivation and says, “The Bookstore Barber Salon: Where the entertainment is always free, no judgment is allowed, honesty is always given kindly, and respecting differences is embraced. Most importantly, to give "a greater haircut experience" ™ from the waiting room to the door.”
The Bookstore Barber Salon is accepting clients by appointment only. Those interested in making an appointment can call the salon at 806-781-2418.
