Lady Dawgs win again to move to 4-2; Dawgs get replacement game vs Granbury

After losing two games to open the season, the Copperas Cove Lady Dawgs volleyball team have since reeled off four-consecutive wins, including the marathon win over Bryan in five sets (21-25, 25-14, 24-26, 26-24, 15-10) Friday night at Bulldawg Gymnasium.

Senior Jasmine Davis had a big game to lead the way with 16 kills while junior Kyra Gaston had a team-high 16 blocks and added nine kills to help the Lady Dawgs beat out the visiting Lady Vikings.

Senior Emily Vanderpoel set up that offense with 30 assists while sophomore Jakhi Smith added 13.

Keeping the offense in the match was the back-row defense of junior Emma Wasiak with a team-high 46 digs and 43 serves received.

Adding to the Lady Dawgs’ 44 kills were senior Larissa Melendez (8), junior Jiya Edwards (5), senior Hope Chapman (3), sophomore Aaliyah Butler (2 and Vanderpoel (1).

Butler added 10 blocks to the team’s 34 blocks, followed by Melendez (5), Vanderpoel (4), and Chapman (2).

Adding to the 107 Cove digs were junior Leeann Edmond (17), senior Jae Rogers (15), Vanderpoel (8), Butler (6), Smith (5), Davis (4), Edwards (3), Chapman (2) and Melendez 1.

Vanderpoel also led in aces with two while Edmond had one.

The Lady Dawgs (4-2, 2-0 in District 12-6A), hit the road for a district contest against the Shoemaker Lady Grey Wolves. The junior varsity will open things at 5:30 with the varsity to follow.

The Bulldawgs’ football team were looking at a bye week after the Red Oak Hawks were forced to pull out of Friday’s game at home, but the COVID-19 pandemic closed one door and opened another.

Granbury also lost an opponent, which created an opportunity for the Bulldawgs to get back on the schedule for this week.

The 7:30 p.m. home game is now a 7:00 p.m. road game at Granbury’s Pirate Stadium on Friday.

The Pirates (1-1) are coming off a 46-35 loss to Waco University after opening the season with a 56-20 win over Fort Worth Paschal.

The Bulldawgs (0-2) will have to find consistency on the offensive side to keep pace with the Pirates that have averaged nearly 500 yards and 45.5 points per game in their two contests. The Pirates are well-balanced with 207 yards per contest coming through the air and 279 yards come from the ground game.

Copperas Cove is averaging 300 yards and 10.5 points per game through two weeks. The ground game leads the way with 206 yards per outing while the passing game averages 94 yards.

The ticket prices are $6 for adults and $4 for students and $8 at the gate (cash only). No online tickets sales are available. Tickets will be sold at Bulldawg Stadium Tuesday, Oct. 3 from 3:30 to 8 p.m. and on Thursday, Oct. 8 from 3:30 to 8 p.m.
