Powerlifting leads active week for Cove sports teams

The Bulldawgs and Lady Dawgs powerlifting teams played host this week for the Copperas Cove Bulldawg meet held at Cove High’s Gym 2 on Thursday where the Lady Dawgs took home the top spot with 48 points in front of Belton (45) and the Bulldawgs finished second with 41 points behind Belton (61).
Leading the Lady Dawgs was Alyssa Arnold who had a combined weight of 1,260 pounds to take first place in the 259-plus weight class. She cleared 550 in the squat, 310 in the bench press and 430 in the dead lift. Jiya Edwards also notched a first-place finish at 148 lbs with a total of 795 lbs – 300, 165, 330).
Also finishing on the podium were Maddison Sheumaker (2nd at 148 lbs – 795 lbs – 285, 190, 320); Alyssa Marmolejo (2nd at 97 lbs. - 520 lbs – 195, 85, 240); Emily Cason (2nd at 105 lbs - 565 lbs – 230, 85, 250); Arianna Eseroma (2nd at 132 lbs - 710 lbs – 265, 160, 285); Alisha Dannatien (2nd at 198 lbs – 780 lbs – 325, 175, 280); Alivia Arnold (3rd at 123 lbs - 600 lbs – 245, 130, 225); and Maliyah Tate (3rd at 165 lbs – 685 lbs – 260, 115, 310).
Also competing for the Lady Dawgs Athena Aviles (4th at 97 – 375 – 150, 75, 150); Dayna Ruiz- (5th at 123 – 560 lbs – 235, 90, 235); Alexcia Gaines (6th at 148 – 610 – 245, 110, 245); Kayla Zamora (7th at 123 – 475 lbs – 200, 75, 200); Natalia Timm (8th at 123 – 450 – 180, 90, 180); Melanie Malave (8th at 181 – 485 – 190, 75, 220); and Jennifer Denton (11th at 165 – 500 – 185, 90, 225).
Four Bulldawgs notched first-place finishes to lead the way. Aaron Shanahan lifted 1,760 total pounds to take first in the super heavyweight division. He cleared 700 in the squat, 425 in the bench press and 635 in the dead lift. Tyler Morrow finished first in the 114 class with 960 lbs – 340, 195, 425. McKenneth Davis took the top spot in the 220 class with 1,185 lbs – 405, 315, 465. Zachery Hoyle finished first in the 242 class with 1,595 lbs – 570, 425, 600.
Also finishing on the podium were Brandon Ortega (3rd at 181 – 1,180 – 440, 315, 425) and Caleb Newberry (3rd at 220 – 1,035 – 420, 240, 375).
Rounding out the Bulldawg lifters were Tyrese Francis (4th at 165 – 1,120 – 460, 250, 410); Kendal Parker (4th at 181 – 1,085 – 385, 255, 445); Jeremy Carter (4that 275 – 1,255 – 480, 305, 470); Dan Llanez (4th at SHW – 1,385 – 530, 295, 560); Thomas Holman (5th at SHW – 1,345 – 525, 335, 485); Marvin Aviles (5th at 198 – 980 – 355, 240, 385); Adrian Fairley (5th at 123 – 580 – 200, 155, 225); Chandler Gastelo (6th at 165 – 1,060 – 395, 250, 415); Tyrese Hale (7th at 220 – 915 – 350, 250, 315); Ryan Connor (7th at SHW – 1,210 – 450, 325, 435); Tarin Morrow (8th at 165 – 1,025 – 375, 225, 425); and Peyton Reed (11th at SHW – 1,050 – 405, 240, 405).
The last qualifying meet before regionals will be held Saturday, Feb. 22 in Hamilton.
Lady Dawgs’ golf also notched a pair of podium finishes as junior Elle Fox shot a 75 to finish first at Sammons Golf Course in Temple on Friday. Senior Maddie Miller finished second with a round of 80. Morgan Gallipeau finished with a 116.
The Bulldawgs baseball squad got their rain-delayed season started with a 10-2 win over Gatesville in a scrimmage at Bulldawg Field on Friday. The Bulldawgs’ pitching staff combined for a no-hitter. Cove will return to action at home Friday with a matchup against Vandegrift set for 4:30 p.m.
The Lady Dawgs’ softball team went 2-1 in Gatesville with a 14-5 win over the Hornets to begin the tournament before suffering a close 9-6 loss to Salado and blanking Comanche 5-0 to close the tourney.
The Lady Dawgs open District 12-6A play tonight at home against the Belton Lady Tigers with a first pitch set for 7 p.m.
The Bulldawgs and Lady Dawgs’ soccer teams faced tough Belton teams and suffered shutouts. The Bulldawgs fell to Belton 6-0 while the Lady Dawgs fell 3-0. The Dawgs host Killeen tonight at 7:30 and the Lady Dawgs will hit the road to face the Lady Roos.
