Dawghouse Theater presents “Annie”
Special to Leader-Press
Copperas Cove High School Dawghouse Theatre presents one of Broadway’s longest running plays, Annie, nightly starting Thursday through Saturday, with performances at 7 p.m. The musical by Thomas Meehan is based on the comic strip, Little Orphan Annie.
CCHS theatre directors Becca Burkhead and Mason Tabor said this play was chosen for several reasons.
“One reason is that this show is a classic. We wanted a family friendly show that all ages could enjoy,” Burkhead said. “We also chose this musical because we have several talented girls and this was the perfect show for that.”
CCHS senior Krizia Keefer is the stage manager for the production.
“When I was offered the stage manager position, I was really excited. But soon after, worry and self-doubt just hit me,” Keefer said. “This is the first show I’ve stage managed. But, I was able to overcome it through hard work and guidance from my directors. I’m very confident in my job at this point, and I’m glad to be a part of this show, especially as a leader.”
CCHS senior Angel Barker plays the role of Duffy, another orphan, and also serves as dance captain, selecting all of the choreography for each scene and musical number.
“I’ve loved Annie since I first watched it in elementary school,” Barker said. “Initially, I was scared that we weren’t going to live up to the high expectations that come with doing such a well-known production, but our show is amazing.”
Angel Mosley, a CCHS freshman, plays the role of Annie.
“Not only did I get a lead (role), I get to play an amazing character,” Mosely said. “Annie is an 11- year old orphan growing up during the Great Depression who is charismatic, witty, and outgoing and there’s nobody I would have rather played.
“For me, she was a difficult character because she lives a life I’ve never experienced. Being Annie has pushed me a lot further than any other plays I’ve participated in. It taught me to have optimism and it’s taught me how to make mistakes on stage. It’s bettered me as an actor and I’m very lucky to have been a part of such an amazing production.”
The show runs Oct. 25-27, 7 p.m. at Lea Ledger Auditorium, 400 S. 25th Street. Regular admission is $10. Those with student and military identification are admitted for $5.
