On Friday, 15 year old Mona Lopez had her first chance to explore a safe, secure play area in her family’s backyard from the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Mona was born with Trisomy-13, or Patau syndrome, a genetic condition which caused her to be born blind, having muscle and motor function issues, along with severe mental retardation, seizures and respiratory problems. The majority of children born with Trisomy-13 don’t survive past infancy, yet Mona has beat the odds and attends Copperas Cove High School. Her family had a wish, that she could have a safe and secure play area in the backyard while the family enjoyed time outdoors. Mona spends time in her wheelchair, but is also able to be placed on the floor and play with toys.
