From the Vault: '59, '69, '79

To commemorate the 125th year of publication of the Copperas Cove Leader-Press in 2019, every Friday the Leader-Press will share snippets from the community’s history over the past 60 years in From the Vault.

40 years ago, in the Copperas Cove Leader
New tennis courts were opened at Mae Stevens Elementary, Martin Walker Elementary, and J.L. Williams Junior High School. Residents may use the facilities from 7 a.m. until 10 p.m., with students having priority from noon until 4:30 p.m. on school days. Money for the courts came from a Texas Parks & Wildlife grant. Land for the courts was provided by the Copperas Cove Independent School District. 
CCISD superintendent Leland Frase announced that CCISD schools were accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, meaning that Cove schools meet standard above those set as minimum requirements for schools in the state of Texas. 

50 years ago, in the Copperas Cove Press 
A $1,120,864 school budget for the 1969-70 fiscal year was approved by the Copperas Cove school board at a regular meeting on Tuesday night. The board also awarded a bid to Austin Baking Co. for bread at 21-1/2 cents a loaf; to Foremost for milk at just under 8 cents a half-pint; and to Gulf for gasoline at 18.6 cents a gallon. 
Jacob Cobb, who will be in the 8th grade this fall at the Avenue E Junior High School, found a zipped money bag containing $1,500. He turned the money in to the Copperas Cove Police Department and received a $50 reward from the owner, Luke Austin. 
 
60 years ago, in the Copperas Cove Courier
The Copperas Cove school board adopted a Guidance Program for Copperas Cove School. The program is designed to keep students happy, efficient, and well-adjusted in their school activities and studies.
