Cove shortstop Travis Sanders continues to make a name for himself on the select baseball scene.
The Perfect Game 39th-ranked player in the 2022 class joined forces with six other top 40 players on the Canes National 15U team at the WWBA 15U National Championship last Friday in Marietta, Ga where they opened the tournament with a 13-0 win over US Elite Mid Atlantic.
Sanders connected on a line-drive single followed by a double on day one of the tournament to draw some praise from those in attendance.
“The 39th-ranked player in the 2022 class, Travis Sanders (2022, Copperas Cove, Texas), had a huge day at the plate showing one of the smoothest swings and pure hit tools at Day 1 of 15u WWBA,” said Greg Gerard in his scouting notes from day one. “The righthanded hitting primary shortstop got the start at third base for Canes National and hit in the two-hole in the lineup. Sanders’ swing is loose as he gets his hands going to the baseball and the barrel control is obvious as one watches the swing plane through the hitting zone.”
Sanders was a First Team All-District selection as a freshman for the Dawgs. He was 28 for 94 for a .298 batting average. He led the team in runs scored with 37 and added 15 RBIs from the lead-off position. He was also tied for second-best in walks with junior Cam Petet at 19. Sanders had 34 putouts, 61 assists and turned 15 double plays at shortstop.
Joining Sanders on the elite squad is no. 11 Nathan Fink, no. 13 Cole Young, no. 18 Tristan Smith, no. 23 James Triantos, no. 27 Mason Neville and no. 38 Lamar King.
Cove junior Elle Fox finished 20th out of 43 golfers in the USGA Women’s Amateur Qualifier in DuPont, Wa. She shot a one-day total of 76.
