It may be summer but that hasn’t stopped some Copperas Cove Lady Dawgs from getting work done or some others to be recognized for their efforts in the 2019 season.
Last week, Copperas Cove senior sprinter Nadia Robinson and sophomore softballer Alina Salizar were named to the Texas Girls Coaches Association All State Teams for their efforts in the 2019 season.
Robinson helped teammates Malaya Thorpe, Mahal Thorpe and Olivia Nageeullah qualify for the Region II-6A meet with a silver-medal finish at the Area Meet in Waco.
Robinson was one of 38 players selected to the 6A team.
The sophomore Salazar made the 40-person team despite her Lady Dawgs’ softball team narrowly missing the playoffs. She joins a trio of 12-6A rivals from Belton – senior Avery Drake, senior Caeligh Robinson and sophomore Paige Nunez and Waco Midway – senior Jazmine Gendorf.
Cove softballer Rylie Radigan also recently signed a letter of intent to continue her education and softball career at Lincoln College in Lincoln, Illinois.
Cove junior Elle Fox has also been keeping her golf game crisp, including a 28th-place finish in the three-day Texas Golf Association’s 2019 Women’s Stroke-Play Championships at the Briggs Ranch Golf Club in San Antonio over the weekend.
Fox opened the mostly college-player tournament with a 4-over-par 76 on the 6,221-yard course. Birdies on the par 4 378-yard hole 6, the 127-yard par 3 hole 8 and 474-yard par 5 13th hole led the way on day one.
Fox had just one birdie on day two but didn’t card a single double bogey on the day to make the cut with another 76 on day two.
She stayed consistent on the final day with one birdie and 13 pars to close out the tournament with a combined 228 to finish tied for 28th out of 65 competitors.
TCU graduate Annika Clark won the tournament with a combined score of 207, including a 6-under-par second round 66. Sam Houston State’s Hanna Alberto finished second with a combined 210.
Fox, along with Cove senior Madelyn Miller, will continue their summer action this week with tournaments in the Southern Texas Professional Golf Association and Beltway Junior Golf Tour, beginning with Miller yesterday at the Mill Creek Country Club in Salado.
