The filing period is now open for a special election to be held on April 27 for mayor of Copperas Cove.

The Copperas Cove city council approved an ordinance at its meeting on Tuesday, calling for a special election to fill the position of mayor, after Frank Seffrood passed away on Dec. 28, a little more than two weeks after winning a runoff election on Dec. 11.

At that time, Seffrood was in a runoff against Azeita Taylor, in which he received 53.35 percent, or 581, of the votes compared to Taylor’s 508 votes, or 46.65 percent.

The election schedule was announced on Tuesday evening, with a filing period to go from Jan. 15 through Sunday, Feb. 25. Election packets are available at the City Secretary’s office, which is located at 914 S. Main St. Suite B. Completed packets may be dropped off at the office between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Packets may be mailed to the same address.

Early voting in the special election will take place from April 10-23, with a cost estimate of $7,400.80.

Interim City Manager Ryan Haverlah announced at the meeting that he had spoken with the Coryell County election administrator, Justin Carothers, who said that Copperas Cove residents who live in Lampasas County would be permitted to vote in Copperas Cove.

Voting will take place at the Coryell County Justice Center at 210 S. 1st St. in Copperas Cove.
