Copperas Cove junior pole vaulter Kyle Stifflemire will compete with the big Dawgs in two weeks when he participates in the 43rd Annual Great Southwest Track & Field Classic at the University of New Mexico’s Track & Field Stadium in Albuquerque, NM to be held May 31-June 2.
Stifflemire had a disappointing end to a stellar season where he set new school records time and time again; including clearing the 16 feet, 2 inch mark at the Texas Relays in March.
Stifflemire easily won the District 8-6A meet and had one of the highest marks in the state before an issue with the padding being too close prevented him from moving on to the Regional meet and perhaps state.
The boys’ pole vaulters will compete in two flights on Saturday, June 2. The first flight will begin at 4 p.m. with the second flight set for a 6:30 p.m. start.
Christopher Nilsen of Kansas City, Missouri holds the meet record with a vault of 18-feet-3 set in 2016.
Junior KC Lightfoot of Lee’s Summit High School in Missouri won last year’s event with a vault of 17-feet-8 ½ and senior Riley Richards of China Spring High School in Texas finished second with a vault of 17-feet-0 ¾ inches. Stifflemire’s best jump of 16-feet-2 would have landed him on the podium in that field.
