For the second-consecutive Friday, the Copperas Cove softball and baseball games were called due to lightning.
Knotted at 4-all Lady Dawg Field, the Lady Dawgs game was postponed with a restart time of 8 p.m. but, after more lighting and torrential rains, the game was postponed until 5 p.m. last night (results not available at press time).
The Lady Dawgs took a 4-1 lead after one inning of action, but the Lady Knights were able to knot it up at 4-all just prior to the delay in the top of the second inning.
A fielding error by Cove in the top of the first inning allowed the Lady Knights to take a 1-0 lead before the Lady Dawgs rattled off four runs in the bottom of the inning for a 4-1 lead.
A walk by Addie Cook, a single to center field by Jayda Carter set up Alina Salazar for the RBI single to knot the game at 1-all before shots by Maddie Scribner and Brooke Schmidt gave the Lady Dawgs their 4-1 lead.
A triple by Valeria Cosme plated Kiara Duncap and Sha’Nauta Powell to bring the Lady Knights within one, 4-3. Duncap doubled to reach while Powell was hit by a pitch.
A sacrifice bunt by Maddison Garrison scored Cosme for the tying run just before the game was delayed.
Across town, the Bulldawgs were leading 9-2 in the top of the fourth inning in game two of the home-away series against Harker Heights when lighting forced the delay.
The game was knotted at 2-all until an offensive outburst by Cove in the top of the 4th inning.
Five consecutive walks by Jaylen Smith, Michael Goudeau, Josh Ropple, Cameron Johnson and Tyler Ingram scored the first two runs before a two-RBI double to centerfield by Nick Izquierdo and a three-run home run by designated hitter Justin Velesky opened up the flood gates for a 9-2 Cove lead before the actual floods came down to halt the action with two outs in the top of the 4th and Smith at first base.
A sacrifice fly by Ingram scored Goudeau in the first inning after he drew a lead-off walk.
The Knights took the lead in the bottom of the first on a pair of RBI walks. Kelan Jones and Jackson Rinehart drew lead-off walks and Tre Martin connected on a single to juice the bases before Chan Rinehart and Matt Smith each earned RBI walks for the 2-1 Knights’ lead.
Johnson knotted the game in the bottom of the second inning with an RBI walk that scored Smith who also reached on a walk. A walk by Ropple loaded the bases for the Johnson RBI.
The Dawgs and Knights resumed their game at 6 p.m. last night but results were not available at press time.
