Noon Exchange Club discusses Mayfest 5K, hands out awards

The Noon Exchange Club of Copperas Cove met on March 9 at Lil Tex Restaurant. President Mike Blount called the meeting to order, and Pastor Brian Hawkins offered the invocation. During the opening announcements, Mayfest 5K Color Run Chairperson Dennis Ayres gave an update on the 5K Run taking place on May 12 at Ogletree Gap. The fest will include the 5K run, entertainment, runner awards and raffles. This year’s event will also include a car show. Members are encouraged to seek sponsorship from businesses and organizations. Funds raised from the event will be distributed to organizations that focus on Child Abuse prevention and awareness. Businesses interested in sponsoring the run can contact Ayres at dennayres@aol.com.Then, Club Member Sandor Vegh shared details about the three Head Start Pre-school Easter Egg Hunts taking place on March 27 around 10:30 and 11:00 am. The club will pass out over one thousand eggs filled with treats to the Headstart students. Following the announcements, the club honored two seniors and one educator from Copperas Cove High School. Secretary Melissa Rosa presented CCHS Senior Tiana Byrd the Noon Exchange Club of Copperas Cove Youth of the Quarter Award. Byrd received the award for demonstrating scholastic achievements, volunteerism and outstanding leadership qualities.
Next, Secretary Pat Thomas presented CCHS Senior Derrick Burleson LEFT the Noon Exchange Club of Copperas Cove ACE of the Quarter Award. The ACE (Accepting the Challenge of Excellence) Award is given to those students who demonstrate academic progress despite various obstacles.
The Copperas Cove Educator of the Quarter Award was presented to CCHS Educator Marvin Johnson by Board Member James Tatum. Johnson was given the award for his extra efforts in meeting the needs of his students.
Following the Award Ceremony, Central Texas College Development and Foundation Director Wendy Martel presented information about the programs and scholarships available to students interested in attending Central Texas College. Martel shared that many scholarships are available and many go unclaimed. Martel also answered several questions from club members about the foundation.
In closing, Board Member Angela Fields held the Child Abuse Prevention Drawing and Club Member Brooke Johnson asked members to join in the reading of the Covenant of Service. The Noon Exchange Club of Copperas Cove meets the second and fourth Friday of every month at Lil’ Tex Restaurant. The next meeting is March 23.
