Amy’s Attic collects coats for kids

Wednesday and Thursday, the Amy’s Attic Self Storage Moving Truck began delivering coats to kids all over Copperas Cove.
With the goal of spreading the warmth through the area, Amy’s Attic Self Storage in Cove and Operation Phantom Support have been collecting coats over the past two months. Wednesday, volunteers collected last-minute donations and helped load the donations into a moving truck. Donations will be delivered to local elementary and middle schools to help keep kids warm. Some of the donations will also be taken to Cove House.
“It’s kind of frightening that some kids don’t have coats or the homeless don’t,” said Lisa Sherwood, Manager of Amy’s Attic in Copperas Cove. Lisa took on the bulk of the work involved with the project.
“This was all thanks to Lisa Sherwood’s efforts,” said Bob Vomvas, Director of Operations for Amy’s Attic. “[Amy’s Attic staff] supported her 100 percent. Lisa Sherwood busted her tail to make this a reality.”
Sherwood and other Amy’s Attic employees got out the word through social media and word of mouth and managed to make their coat drive a big success. Heart on a Mission was one of their big donors having donated several large trash bags filled with coats to help out, and several other groups and families within the community brought in what they could.
“It makes my heart happy that everyone is so caring…This is a good community,” said Sherwood. “All the hard work was well worth it.”
“I think it was a wonderful idea. It looks like she had a good amount of coats donated,” said Peggy Perkins, local store marketing representative for Papa John’s. Perkins donated some of food provided to volunteers during the event. “We’ve partnered with Amy’s Attic a few times…I try to sponsor anything that’s worthwhile.”
Nicholas B. Haffter Von Heide, owner of Fresh Pressed Coffee which will be launching soon in Cove, also donated a large number of coats bringing in a van full of brand new coats. Haffter Von Heide saw that Walmart was having a clearance sale on coats, and took the opportunity to purchase every coat that was on clearance and brought donate to the event. He said that he lives by the motto ‘Fueling lives, fueling dreams’, and said that it was what he felt led to do. 
“My wife and I love to make sure the kids are warm,” said Haffter Von Heide. “This facilitated a chance to put my wallet where my mouth is.”
Thanks to the kindness of the donors, Copperas Cove will be a little bit warmer this winter.
