CTC names Burns as new board member

Central Texas College recently announced Joseph Burns, superintendent of the Copperas Cove Independent School District (CCISD), has been appointed to Place 3 of the Board of Trustees, replacing Elwood “Woody” Shemwell who retired. 
Burns was sworn in during the January board meeting and will serve the remainder of Shemwell’s six-year term which expires in 2019. 
Burns has served as CCISD superintendent since 2012. Prior to that, he served three years as superintendent of the Vidor Independent School District, seven years as superintendent of Kirbyville Consolidated ISD and superintendent of the Hubbard Independent School District from 2000 to 2002. Before that, Burns was the principal of W.H. Brandon Elementary School in Lufkin, TX and spent two years as principal of Zavalla Elementary School in Zavalla, TX. 
An active member of the community, Burns is a member of the Texas A&M-Central Texas SPEAC Committee, executive board member of the Texas Association of Community Schools, a board member of the Texas Association of Federally Impacted Schools and an administrative committee member of the Texas Association of School Administrators. 
He also serves as a member of Equity Center, the National Association of Federally Impacted Schools and the Military Impacted Schools Association.
In Copperas Cove, Burns serves as president of the Copperas Cove Noon Lions’ Club, member of the Copperas Cove Morning Exchange Club, chairman of the Copperas Cove Crime Stoppers and is a board member of the Sunshine Exchange Home.
