Last-day filing brings candidate total to five

Filing for the Copperas Cove city council election ended Monday at 5 p.m. and both places 6 and 7 have contested races.
The race for city council place 6 saw one final-day filing, with Edward “Marc” Payne joining a two-way race between John A. Hull and Danny Palmer.
Payne ran for city council in the 2016 election for place 5 against Kirby Lack.
He is a longtime area resident, veteran, small business owner, and currently serves as the chairman of the Copperas Cove Economic Development Corporation and is a board member of the Keep Copperas Cove Beautiful Commission.
Place 7 remains a two-way race between incumbent Matthew Russell, who ran unopposed for his first term in 2014. This year, former councilman Charlie Youngs is challenging Russell for the council seat.
On Thursday, a drawing took place at 9 a.m. in the city secretary’s office for the order of the November 7 ballot.
For place 6, the order on the ballot will be Danny Palmer, E. Marc Payne, John A. Hull.
For place 7, the order on the ballot will be Charlie Youngs, Matthew Russell.
Early voting for the November 7 election starts on Monday, October 23. The last day to register to vote in the November 7 election is Monday, October 9.
Voter registration cards are located in the city secretary’s office at City Hall, located at 914 S. Main St., Suite C.
