Everything plus a kitchen sink or two was up for grabs at the Kempner Volunteer Fire Department’s annual Barbeque and Auction fundraiser held Saturday evening at the Kempner VFD.

This year is the second year to raise funds for a stationary Containment self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) fill station, compressor and four-bottle storage system to refill the bottles that the firefighters use, according to Nancy Owen, who is in charge of the Kempner VFD support group and wife of the Kempner VFD Fire Chief, Dewey Owen. Currently, Kempner firefighters have to go to a neighboring town’s fire department to refill everything, which takes time away from other things they could be doing, Owen added.

Kempner VFD is an all-volunteer fire department and receives little funding from the county, relying on donations to fund all the equipment needed to safely put out fires in the area. Last year, the barbeque and auction raised close to $14,000 according to Owen. The barbeque and auction has been held for over 30 years, according to Richard Rowland, who is on the Executive Board and a former firefighter.
