During Tuesday night’s Copperas Cove city council workshop, Representative J.D. Sheffield of District 59 was present to read a proclamation in honor of the late Timothy Molnes, who was chief of police in Copperas Cove from July 1999 until shortly before his death on May 30 of this year.
Sheffield’s proclamation acknowledged that Molnes’ passing “has deeply saddened the Copperas Cove community which he served with tremendous distinction for more than 3-1/2 decades.”
It also described Molnes training and his career achievements as he advanced “swiftly through the ranks” from patrol officer, then to detective, corporal, sergeant, lieutenant, captain, deputy chief, and eventually chief of police in July 1999.
“He was highly regarded by his peers for his strong leadership skills, and his wealth of knowledge and experience,” said Sheffield, also noting that Molnes had a “special knack for alleviating tension and stressful situations with humor.”
Another notable position that Sheffield spoke of was Molnes serving concurrently as the city’s assistant city manager since 2007 and that one of his proudest achievements was his role in the design and construction of the city’s new police facility which opened in 2010.
Also mentioned was Molnes’ dedication to his wife of 37 years, Tracy, as well as his daughters, Kayla and Erin daughters, as well as his grandchildren.
“He made significant and lasting contributions to the community and leaves a legacy that will long resonate in the hearts of the many people whose lives he touched.”
Sheffield said the resolution was to pay tribute to his memory and to extend deepest sympathies to his family.
“I hope these words can in some small way show the affection and respect given to Timothy Molnes,” Sheffield told those assembled, to include Molnes’ wife, Tracy, and his daughter, Kayla.
Tracy said a few words after receiving the proclamation.
“I appreciate this so much, you making the trip, that’s a big thing for us,” she told Sheffield. “All the officers, the men and women of the Copperas Cove Police Department and the city. You guys were near and dear to his heart. He would have done anything for the men and women for the police department.”
