City sales tax revenues continue lower trend

The sales tax revenue payments for August 2016 will soon make their way to cities throughout Texas, and the city of Copperas Cove’s tax rebate for August 2016 is $410,841.36, down 0.47 percent from $412,813.80 it received in August 2015, according to the monthly report released Wednesday from the office of state comptroller Glenn Hegar.
 
Overall for the city, sales tax revenues are down 1.27 percent for 2016 at $2,851,583.69 compared to 2015’s $2,888,402.13.
 
Gatesville’s rebate check amount will be $178,959.17, down 6.25 percent from last August’s amount of $190,903.07, and overall up 0.36 percent compared to 2015. The total for Coryell County is $591,060.42, down 2.26 percent from the August 2015 amount of $604,731.03. Overall Coryell County cities are down 0.73 percent for sales tax revenue compared to 2015.
 
In Lampasas County, Kempner is receiving $13,245.49 in sales tax revenue, up 22.96 percent from August 2015’s amount of $10,771.78. Kempner is up 6.74 percent for 2016 compared to 2015. The city of Lampasas is down 2.23 percent from August 2015, receiving $149,980.11 compared to last year’s amount of $153,414.36. Lampasas County is receiving a total of $173,818.54, up 1.44 percent from August 2015’s amount of $171,345.38, with sales tax rebates up 8.27 percent for the year overall.
 
Sales tax rebates for Bell County cities totaled $5,253,017.07, up 2.76 percent from August 2015’s $5,111,765.55. So far tax revenues for Bell County’s cities are up 3.31 percent overall compared to 2015. Killeen’s rebates amount to $1,971,356.36, an decrease of 2.4 percent from last August at $2,019,965.88 but up for 2016 overall at 1.05 percent. Harker Heights saw an increase of 9.84 percent with sales tax revenues totaling $625,457.84, up from last August’s amount of $569,420.21. For 2016,
 
Harker Heights’ rebate totals are up 0.95 percent. Belton will receive $439,849.58 in sales tax rebates, down 15.09 percent from the $518,044.43 it received in August 2015. Belton is down 2.08 percent overall for 2016 compared to 2015.
 
Numbers continue to be higher than last year, but barely, for cities across the state this year.
 
State Comptroller Glenn Hegar will send cities, counties, transit systems and special purpose taxing districts $769.3 million in local sales tax allocations for August, 1.2 percent more than in August 2015.
 
These allocations are based on sales made in June by businesses that report tax monthly, and sales made in April, May and June by quarterly filers.
 
“The cities of San Antonio, Austin, Fort Worth, Arlington, Plano and Irving saw noticeable increases in sales tax allocations,” Hegar said. “Energy-centric cities, such as Houston and Midland, continue to see decreases in sales tax allocations.”
