The Law Enforcement Explorers program’s Class of 2016 was the youngest class to date when they graduated from the program at a small ceremony held Friday evening at the Lea Ledger Auditorium.
The average age for cadets in the Law Enforcement Explorers program is 16 or 17, according to LEEP coordinator Detective William Hughes. This year, every single cadet, except for one, was either 14 or 15-years-old, and none of them even had their driver’s license, Hughes said.
The Law Enforcement Explorers program is a three-week course in the summer that teaches officer safety, dispatch and radio etiquette, patrol procedures and other things related to law enforcement. It’s open to students ages 14 through 20.
