City Park was the location for many local amateur radio operators, also known as “hams,” to gather for a field day on Saturday where they could practice procedures that they can use in the event of a natural or man-made disaster that might affect the local area.

 

The event ran from Saturday at 10 a.m. until Sunday at 1 p.m., with the Copperas Cove Repeater Association participating under the umbrella of the city’s emergency management coordination.

 

Copperas Cove Deputy Fire Chief Gary Young explained some of the many things amateur radio can provide to a community such as emergency communications, additional bandwidth should public safety communications become overloaded and the ability to maintain order if public communications were cut off by power failure.
