Cove golfers play well at Hutto Invitational

HUTTO – The Copperas Cove boys and girls golf teams fared well this week at the Hutto ISD Invitational at the Star Ranch Golf Course in Hutto despite gusty conditions.
On Monday, senior Tyler Morrison scorched the competition with a one-over-par 72 to take the individual gold and lead her squad to a ninth-place finish in a field of 22 teams.
The girls’ combined score of 390 was 37 strokes behind tournament winners Round Rock McNeil who shot a combined 253. They also finished 14 strokes behind District 12-6A rival Ellison; the only other 12-6A team competing in the event.
Kyra Lewis followed Morrison with a 98 while Carlene Nelson added a 99 and Gabrielle Leal posted a 121.
Leilani McDaniel was the top golfer for McNeil and the second-best individual result behind Morrison with a 77.
Cove returned to Star Ranch on Tuesday morning where the boys notched an impressive seventh-place finish out of 25 teams with a combined score of 333, just 22 strokes behind winner Round Rock Westwood. The top four individual scores comprised the 333-point total.
Senior Bryce Anderson led the way with a 6-over-par 77 followed by Travis Dewald (84), Dustin Dean (85) and Caden McAnally (87). Bryce Ranes added a 91 to the scorecard.
Anderson tied for the ninth-best score on the day behind Crockett’s Ryan Mejia (71), Hutto’s Jake Doggett (72), Leander’s Ryan Palmer (73), Round Rock’s Jack Anderson (73), RR Stony Points’ Quinn Edwards (74), CP Vista Ridge’s Matthew Mulrain (75), Buda Hays’ Gerry Diaz (76) and RR Westwood’s Aaron Marshall (76).
The Cove junior varsity finished in 20th place with a 387 total. Donovan Copeland-Ritchie led the way for the squad with a 90 followed by Marcus Ortiz (96), Justin Hoosline (100) and Bobby Lopez (101).
The Cove boys’ and girls’ golf teams return to the tee box next weekend, March 4-5, for the Burnet Junior Golf Association Tournament at the Delaware Springs Golf Course in Burnet.
The teams will finish off the regular season at the Comfort Bobcat Invitational at the Buckhorn Golf Course in Comfort on March 8 and 9. The girls will take to the course on Tuesday while the boys will compete on Wednesday.
