Morrison wins WTJCT event; Anderson, Fox also compete
The holiday break from the UIL schedule didn’t keep Cove seniors Tyler Morrison and Bryce Anderson from the links on the West Texas Junior Championship Tour and junior high golfer Elle Fox kept her calendar occupied as well with a third place finish on the Southern Texas PGA Junior Tour.
Morrison followed up a day one 84 with the best score of either day with a 78 on day two to wrap up the WTJCT New Year Classic at the Bentwood Country Club in San Angelo. Her two-day total of 162 bested Darby Ramsdell of Roosevelt (165) for the top spot and edged 12-6A rival Esther Ahn of Harker Heights by seven strokes.
After connecting on just one birdie in the first round, Morrison connected on four birdies in round two. Her biggest improvement came on the par five holes. She was +2 on par five holes on day one but improved to -3 on day two. She also cut down her double bogeys from four to two.
Anderson finished mid-pack in the boys’ 15-18 division. He followed a day one 86 up with an 87 on day two for a two-day total of 173 and a tie for eighth place.
Fox shot an 84 to finish one stroke back of Bentley Cotton of Austin and Lily Gulley of Round Rock who tied atop the leaderboard with an 83.
Fox struggled a bit on the front nine with two double bogeys and just two pars but turned it around on the back nine, finishing with one birdie and four pars in the final six holes.
