The Ellison Eagles used a balanced attack to take sole possession of second place in the district standings with a 13-4 victory over the Copperas Cove Bulldawgs Monday at Hallmark Lanes despite Cove’s Dakota Stutz shooting the highest two-game total in the District’s 15-year history.

Stutz shot games of 278 and 268 for a two-game total of 546. That total topped Ellison’s Drake Revels’ score of 542 set in the 2009-2010 season.

Stutz now leads all bowlers, boy or girl with a 235.10 average. She is nearly 22 points ahead of the next girl Amanda Morgan of Killeen (213.60) and is 13.60 above the boys’ leader Michael Williams of Harker Heights (221.50).

Despite the record-setting performance by Stutz, the Cove coed bowling team lost 13-4 to the Eagles to fall to 3-2 in district play and third-place behind Ellison (4-1) and Harker Heights (5-0). Heights has a Baker average of 185.65 with Ellison (175.55) and Cove (169.10) wrapping up the top three.

James Schirripa and Jeffrey Stamp each averaged 200 to lead Ellison to a 6-1 lead after match play before splitting the team games.

Connor Bragg currently holds the fifth and final individual qualifying spot for the Cove boys with a 189.25 average. Cove’s Chris Ochoa is currently eighth with a 182.70 average. Three of the top four individual spots are held be Heights’ bowlers with Shrippa of Ellison taking the fourth spot in front of Bragg.

The Dawgs will bowl against the bye at Hallmark Lanes on Monday before returning to Hallmark to face Shoemaker on Tuesday, Jan. 26.
