Cove Golf kicks of season with win

WACO – The Copperas Cove Lady Dawgs golf team earned a win in their first action of the year on Monday.

Senior Tyler Morrison and freshman Carly Nelson lead the Lady Dawgs to a total round of 403 to best Belton by 13 strokes in the Waco ISD Fall Invitational at Cottonwood Creek Golf Course in Waco. Morrison shot an 81 to pace the squad and Nelson posted a 100 for second on the team. Hanna Stock shot a 110, Kyra Lewis shot a 112 and Kaylee Welch shot a 131 to round out the team’s scoring.

Midway’s junior varsity finished third with a  423 and Vanguard finished fourth with a 428. Also competing was Temple. The no. 1 team shot a 545 and the Temple (2) team shot a 456.

The Cove junior varsity boys finished eighth overall with a combined score of 398 points. Damon Diaz and Peyton Diaz led the boys with rounds of 97. D.J. Dewald (102), Tyler Brown (102) and Bobby Lopez (114) rounded out the Cove scoring.

Vanguard (2) won the tournament with a combined 338. Belton finished second with a 356 score.

The varsity boys will kick off their season Nov. 13 for the Killeen ISD Invitational at the Stonetree Golf Course in Killeen and the girls and JV boys will get back to on Nov. 16 for the Hutto Invitational at the Star Ranch Golf Course. 

The teams will then get an extended winter break before resuming action in February for the Lampasas Tournament at Hancock Springs Golf Course in Lampasas. The varsity boys will tee off Feb. 1 and the girls will compete on Feb. 4.

AquaDawgs to compete
in Waco tomorrow

The Cove AquaDawgs swim team will compete in their third meet of the young season when they travel to Waco for the Midway Spooktacular Halloween swim meet.

The AquaDawgs are coming off a seventh-place finish at the Tiger Invitational on Oct. 10 in Belton. The boys notched a seventh-place finish with 116 points to pace Cove.  The girls finished ninth with 73 points.

A fourth-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay paced the boys’ squad. The team of senior Joseph Hotz and Joshua Bishop and juniors Christian Gaston and Paul Muniz put up a mark of 3:59.45 for the fourth-place finish.

That same group finished sixth in the 200 Medley relay with a time of 1:59.33 and the same core group finished sixth in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:44.02. Junior Joel Fain replaced Gaston in that race. For full results, visit Midway ISD’s swimming page.

Lady Dawgs Basketball tips off
with road scrimmages 

The 2015-16 basketball season will get underway next week with a pair of scrimmages on the road at College Station and Austin Bowie before their home- and season-opener against A&M Consolidated on Nov. 10. The Lady Dawgs will then host the Bush’s Classic tournament Nov. 12-14 at Bulldawg Gymnasium.
