SAN ANTONIO, TX —So you think you can dance? The CCHS Copperettes will tell you that being on the award-winning dance line is about more than just dancing. It is an opportunity grow as a dancer, as a person, and as a leader.

Members of the team recently attended the American Dance/Drill Team School Officer and Leadership Camp and took numerous classes covering everything from motivation, polishing routines, advance technique, new routines, and more, Copperettes Director Samantha Selby said.

“During camp, the officers were also evaluated on their routines brought from home as well as routines learned during classes and even a creative choreography routine,” she said. “I feel we did very well. We have an exciting year ahead and I know that my officers will put their new skills to good use.”

The dance officers earned a Diamond Sweepstakes award which is the highest honor possible for their three routines and the social officers received an Award of Excellence for their dance and presentation. Dawn Polite, Junior Lieutenant, said officer camp went really well.

“The classes really taught us so much that will help us grow as officers and people,” she said. “The teachers and classes gave us so many tips that will help us do our jobs to help Mrs. Selby and our team.”

Selby said that the Copperettes Booster Club is one of the strongest this year stating that the volunteer group of parents and dancers raised enough money to pay for the camp fees, transportation, lodging and even offer a per diem for meals per day.

Lily Sallfors, Sophomore Sergeant, said although camp was about having fun, hard work was always a must.

“Most of the activities we partook in involved teamwork. Aside from the stress that camp may have caused among us, I feel like all of the officers have been and still are in the process of being brought closer together,” she said. “The social officers’ classes explained that there was more to being a social officer than playing games and keeping the team motivated. It taught me that they, too, are leaders, and that they should do their best to set an example for their peers, even if they are not the highest in rank.”
