SUMMER LEARNING

On Thursday morning, kids in the Air, Water and Fuel Rockets class concluded the work on their rockets which they built under the direction of Michael Owens, a CTC instructor and engineering and robotics teacher for KISD. The class which met each morning through Thursday last week focused on physics principles, such as Center of Gravity and Center of Pressure, Owens said. The hands-on class gave the young studnets ike Rebecca Mack, age 10, plenty of opportunities to design, construct and test rockets. “I got interested in rockets when my school had the Science Olympiad,” Mack said as she worked on attaching fins to her plastic bottle rocket. Besides the bottle rockets, kids also made a variety of paper tube rockets of varying diameters and weights. The Central Texas College Continuing Education department offers more College for Kids classes continuing this month. Youngsters three years to high school age are offered a variety of classes mixing fun and hands-on learning in the areas of science, performing arts, arts and crafts, life skills, cooking, business, languages and more. Some upcoming classes include: n Stop Motion for Kids (age eight and up): Learn the fun and exciting process of creating still-frame animated characters and objects for stop-motion films. Students will work with clay or can bring objects no more than four or five inches tall to use as models. The class is each Saturday, July 11-25, from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. The cost is $39. n Weather Phenomena (age 5-12): Take a trip through the weather phenomena on Earth and on other planets in the solar system. Students will create a Texas tornado, sweet snowflakes and other weather activities. The class is Friday, July 10 from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. The cost is $35.
 
Green is the New Black (age 10 and up): Learn how small changes towards “going green” can have a big environmental impact. The class is Saturday, July 11 from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. The cost is $25.
 
Spanish (age 7-11): Learn various customs and courtesies along with phrases, numbers, colors and elementary sentence construction for initial conversations in Spanish. The class is Monday-Thursday, July 13- 16, from 9-11 a.m. The cost is $45.
 
Comic Books (age eight and up): Learn the fundamentals of creating your own comic book story. The courses focuses on exploring story lines, drawing, improvisation, setting up the story, layout and formatting. The class meets each Saturday, July 11-25, from 1 – 3:30 p.m. The cost is $45.
 
K-Prep Math (age 4-6): This new class focuses on the skills of numbers and operations, geometric concepts and measurements. It is designed for students who have not entered kindergarten. The class is Monday/ Wednesday, July 13 – August 5, from 10-11 a.m. The cost is $45
 
K-Prep Reading (age 4-6): Another new class which focuses on the skills of phonetic awareness, phonics, sight words, vocabulary, comprehension and print awareness. It is designed for non-readers and emergent readers who have not yet entered kindergarten. The class is Monday/Wednesday, July 13 through August 5, from 10-11 a.m. The cost is $45.
 
It’s Cookie Time (age seven and up): Learn how to make, cut out, bake and decorate homemade sugar cookies. The class is Saturday, July 18 from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. The cost is $49.
 
Basic Aid Training (age 6-10): This class teaches how to use Emergency Action Steps, give general care and basic first aid. Students will also learn fire prevention and safety, how to avoid getting lost, Internet safety, poison patrol, Water Whiz safety and being safe while operating or riding anything with wheels. The class is Monday/Wednesday, July 13-15, from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. The cost is $45.
 
Crime Scene Investigation (age 12 and up): In this hands-on training, students will learn the basics of criminal investigation and how a crime scene is processed. They will learn to collect evidence including fingerprinting and lifting cast impressions of foot prints at a mock crime scene. The class is each Saturday, July 18 and 25, from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. The cost is $45. Registration is underway now for these and other classes which start in July and August.
