The Copperas Cove High School cafeteria was filled Tuesday evening with members and faculty of the school’s Future Farmers of America group, known as the FFA. 75 students sat down to a dinner of pulled pork, coleslaw, beans and dessert as they celebrated another year of study and learning. Neal Schwausch, Amanda Anderson and Tui Hewitt, the faculty advisors, talked about these outstanding students. During this year, members have learned about leadership, agriculture, veterinary medicine, farm mechanics, horticulture, the business of running a farm, wild life, raising farm animals and livestock management. Many of the students raise a farm animal during the year and at the end of the school year, they take these animals to several large farm shows wheretheir various animals are sold. Schwausch said that at these sales, some of the students do indeed shed a few tears as they become attached to their animal projects, but that is part of the business of agriculture. The students take this elective course very seriously and exhibit their leadership skills by not only successfully mastering the lessons they learn through FFA, but also maintaining excellent grades for the rest of their high school courses. FFA is a nationwide organization which not only prepares their members for a successful career in agriculture, but also emphasizes leadership skill which they can use in any profession they choose to follow.
