At least 150 gathered yesterday to commemorate the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. with the 17th annual commemorative walk.
Hosted by Bible Way Missionary Baptist Church, the nearly one-mile walk's had participants that included members from area churches and local residents, along with representatives from the City of Copperas Cove.
The walk began at First Step Child Care Center on F.M. 116 south. As walkers traveled along, the group sang and some carried signs honoring Martin Luther King Jr. After arriving at the church, walkers prepared for a service.
Pastor Vincent Gillard of Crossroads Missionary Baptist Church in Killeen served as the master of ceremonies.
“I pondered and asked God first of all, what should be, would be said,” Gillard told those assembled. In light of what's been going on in the country, he said he did think of words like, “Hands up—don't shoot” and “I can't breathe.”a
“But then I thought of Martin Luther King Jr., if he were alive today, what would he say about the things going on today? He would remind us of the words of Jesus, 'Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you.'”
The afternoon service included choir songs, a Scripture reading, prayer, greetings from the city of Copperas Cove by councilman Gary Kent; a presentation by Bible Way Youth; scholarship presentation Clementine Lewis, with the MLK commemoration committee. The message was brought by Pastor A.W. Anthony Mays of Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Church in Austin.
