Clever teaching makes state requirements fun

Kindergarten students at Martin Walker Elementary School are having fun in the classroom, not realizing that they are meeting state standards required by Texas Knowledge and Skills. All of the kindergarten classes each read the book, The Little Red Hen, and learned how the other animals were not helpful and therefore did not get to reap the benefits of the completed project. Teacher Hillary Newton said the classes had been studying fairy tales and folktales. “The Little Red Hen’s story gave us the ability to cover a lot of information in class, like recurring phrases, sequencing, retelling, and even counting,” she said.
